The suburb was formerly a fishing village before transforming to an upper class residential area of George Town.  The postal code is 10470. Transporation to and from Tanjung Tokong is extremely convenient.  [Rapid Penang](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rapid_Penang) buses 101, 102 and 104 serve the residents of the suburb, by connecting Tanjung Tokong with [George Town](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Town,_Penang) and other destinations on [Penang Island](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Penang_Island), such as [Tanjung Bungah](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tanjung_Bungah), [Batu Ferringhi](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Batu_Ferringhi), the [Penang International Airport](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Penang_International_Airport) and [Queensbay Mall](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queensbay_Mall). There is also two free-of-charge transit services,  Pulau Tikus Loop (PTL) and the Congestion Alleviation Transport (CAT) Tanjung Tokong route, which are also operated by Rapid Penang. Another bus service, the *[Hop-On Hop-Off](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Penang_Hop-On_Hop-Off)* service, caters primarily to tourists.[\[20\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tanjung_Tokong#cite_note-20) This service, which utilises open-top [double decker](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Double-decker_bus) buses, includes a stop at [Straits Quay](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Straits_Quay). There are plenty of schooling options at Tanjung Tokong as listed below. - SRK Tanjong Tokong - SRJK (C) Hun Bin - SRJK (C) Phor Tay - SMK Tanjong Bunga - S.M.J.K. (C) Union - 5.3km away There are also top commercial shopping malls within Tanjung Tokong itself, namely:  - [City Junction Penang](https://www.cityjunctionpg.com/) - [Island Plaza](https://www.facebook.com/islandplaza/) - [Straits Quay](https://www.straitsquay.com/) And Tanjung Tokong area is very close to Gurney which gives access to shopping malls like Gurney Plaza, Gurney Paragon. For eateries, there is simply too many to be named, you could easily find Malay, Chinese, Indian restaurants and hawkers, but also Korean, Japanese, Mexican food and many more.
